I’m trying to buy a gift for a 10 year old who has read Harry Potter and is currently reading The Hobbit and enjoys fantasy books. I did as a kid as well so I’m torn between all these books that I loved, so I’d love your input on what you’d buy for this age. He reads well above his age/grade but need to still keep it 10yr old appropriate.
I’ve been considering:
* The Prydain Chronicles
* The Chronicles of Narnia
* The Thief of Always
* Redwall Series
Would love input on these, or a suggestion I haven’t thought of yet. Thank you!

Redwall series are very good. Hated the movies.
Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend
My daughter devoured the Warrior Cats series.
Yahtzee Croshaw is a funny author with great characters.
Differently Morphus and Existentially Challenged- Governmental agency involved in the regulation of magic and extra dimensional beings.
Mogworld – Main character is undead. Hijinks insue.
Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones
Pendragon- DJ machale
Skyward series- Brandon Sanderson
Guardians of Gahoole (sp) I forget the author but I loved these at that age about… 19 years ago
I would recommend Prydain over Narnia; then again, I’m not Christian, so the Aslan-as-Jesus stuff tends to rub me the wrong way
Garth Nix Keys of the Kingdom series
Phantom Tollbooth
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
Tamora Pierce’s Circle of Magic has protagonists his age, and her series set in Tortall has knights and magic.
Terry Pratchett. Start with the Tiffany Aching sub series, which is ya, but all of the diskworld books are appropriate for all ages. The first one to look at would be The Wee Free Men
The last kids alive series might be a good fit.
the magic tree house is really good as well, i havent read any of the books you mentioned and found a love of fantasy later in life, but here are some of the best lists and websites i like to use. common sense media is a website with reviews from parents so you really get a good sense of if they would work for your child or whoever’s kid.
The Girl Who Drank The Moon.
It starts out ROUGH but definitely has a huge upswing. Slice of life adventure fantasy.
Kind of Ghibli in feel.
But that first chapter might want some parental oversight.
A Wrinkle In Time
Tripods series by John Christopher
Matthew Looney series
I loved these as a kid – I’m pretty sure they’re at the right level for a 10 year old but you might want to verify that.
Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman. I read it around that age.
The Warhammer Adventures: Realm Quest series by Tom Huddleston
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
Speaking of Rick Riordan, there is the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. So far, I’ve read the Aru Shah series by Roshani Chokshi and the Tristan Strong trilogy by Kwame Mbalia. Both were highly enjoyable.
The Peasprout Chen series by Henry Lien
Tessa Miyata is No Hero by Julie Abe
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede. The books change the first person POV but the same story unfolds throughout the four books. The first one is [Dealing with Dragons](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/150739). Really fun twists on classic fairy tales. Highly recommend!
Septimus Heap! Excellent series of books in a high fantasy setting.
There’s also The Children of the Lamp, about a pair of twins that discover they are djinn (genies).
A much older series if it’s still in print is “The Belgariad”, by David Eddings ( 5 books ). I’ve seen them sold in collections. High fantasy, prophecy, magic, the works. The main character starts off as a boy with a hidden background and abilities, so it’s not exactly original, but it was fresh to me at the time and I have fond memories of it.
When I was around that age I read them after “The Hobbit,” which I loved.
