I started reading a few months ago and I want to read many, many more books so I am looking for books that are not hard to read and understand for a novice reader like me. So far I have read:

    1. A study in scarlet
    2. The sign of four
    3. In 59 seconds
    4. Project Hail Mary

I also tried to read; Why evolution is true, read about 3/4 of the book and stopped because I lost interest because the words were hard for me to understand since I am a new reader and my vocabulary is not vast. Same thing with the book I am trying to read now that is To kill a mockingbird, the plot looked very interesting to me and i started reading it but the old school english is hard for me to understand.

I liked all four of the books I read in entirety and i would like recommendations based on those or a new genre. Also i want to know if the books from Neil Degrasse Tyson are worth reading too as i was thinking about reading the book Starry Messenger since it looks very interesting to me. Thanks in advance.

    1. i’m trying to think of books with a more beginner vocabulary that are also enjoyable reads. the ones below are a wide variety of genres and are all fairy accessible towards a more novice reader. i hope you find something either in my suggestions, or someone elese’s, that piques your interest and you find some good reading material for you on your new journey of our wonderful hobby!

the haunting of hill house – shirley jackson

the karma map – nisha sharma

the hollow tree = james brodgen

eon and eona series – alison goodman

we sold our souls – grady hendrix

      between sisters – kristen hannah

the lost notebook – louise douglas

the time traveler’s wife – audrey niffenegger

the kite runner – khaled hosseini

number the stars – louis lowry

the song of achilles – madeline miller

      the hobbit – jrr tolkein

the house of lost wives – rebecca hardy

the house in the cerulean sea – tj klune

the book eaters – sunyi dean

    2. When you’re looking for something as a new reader, consider looking at YA (young adult) novels. They’re typically very easy to read. Some I’ve enjoyed include

One of us is lying by Karen m McManus

Then she was gone by Lisa jewell

We were liars by e Lockhart

      The Giver by Lois Lowry

      Wonder by r j palacio

I don’t think you can ever go wrong with the Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter either

    3. Keep a pad of paper and a pencil next to you, as well as some post-it tabs. Tab each page with a word you don’t understand and/or write it down to look up later. It will keep you off your phone while reading, and looking the words up later rather than right away actually helps you learn them better.

If you really want simpler books, then I would go with middle grade, mostly fantasy. It’s fun, reads fast, still very enjoyable as an adult, and targeted at an audience still building their vocabulary.

Some really great middle grade books that adults love:

      Amari and the Night Brothers

      Nevermoor

A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll

      Witchlings

      The Lightning Thief
