I was looking for a book on the smaller side to try and finish my reading goal for 2023, and randomly grabbed this off the shelf at the library. I’m glad I did.
This is a collection of long-form narrative journalistic articles that Mark Bowden (author of Black Hawk Down) has written for various publications (such as Vanity Fair) over the decades, covering very interesting cases of true crime. Each article ranges from 25-40 pages in book format, and covers a crime-related story in depth.
Bowden is very talented in bringing out all the interesting elements of the story: the crime scene, the evidence, the investigation. But most of all, he brings out the human element of each story and makes you understand and empathize with the people involved, sometimes even with the criminal.
I looked it up on Goodreads and it has only been rated 793 times, despite being published 3 years ago so I wanted to give it a bump.
