Maybe the greatest literary autobiographical novel of all time. Would recommend to anyone who didn’t possess a sole focus devoted to plot and action, and to everyone who has any positive experience at all with Joyce as a writer. Doubly if that experience was academic.
If it speaks to you, read a little Nabokov, and then move to *Speak, Memory.* There aren’t too many writers who can hold a literary candle to Joyce, but he and Nabokov can perform on the same ticket.

I’d be hesitant to recommend that book unless you have some experience with Dante’s Divine comedy. I read it as a teen and I have to say I don’t think I registered a lot. It would probably help to have a companion. Joyce Annotated: Notes for ‘Dubliners’ and ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ from Amazon looks good.
