Well, those of us who have read ASOIAF know the feeling of frustration at not being able to get a proper ending to the series (yet, hopefully). Still, GRRM’s work is among my favourites, and it has introduced me to the genre of medieval fantasy, which I had not gotten into before. However, now I am left wanting more but I am having trouble finding something as good or anywhere near the quality of ASOIAF. I guess I’m experiencing ‘reader’s block’ which usually happens to me after finishing a book or a series that I really enjoyed, so I’m looking to get out of it.

    My preferences are:

\- Long books/long series: I prefer longer books or series, with intricate plots and many different characters and plotlines. I want to be thrown into a years-long journey!

\- Minimal fantasy or no fantasy: Don’t get me wrong, fantasy’s cool and all, but too much and it throws me off… Also, other genres than fantasy are fine!

\- Preferrably not set in space: I don’t know what it is, but sci-fi just isn’t my thing. It just seems like too much techy-techy stuff makes me loose interest.

\- Depth: I am a big fan of books that make you think, that discuss important/philosophical stuff, or that make you stop and stare into the horizon (the best example, even if it’s not fantasy, is ‘Siddhartha’ by Hesse).

\- Gripping: I guess this is more subjective, but I want to forget all my responsibilites and read into the early hours of the morning because I can’t put the book down!

I hope someone can help! And thanks!

    1. Sanderson is one of my favourite authors but since you said you wanted something with less fantasy I would suggest Robin Hobb instead, her character work is absolutely incredible, you can start with Assassin’s Apprentice but I started with Liveship Traders trilogy which you can read without any previous knowledge of the other books and it’s one of my favourite trilogies ever, 100% recommended.
