Elmore Leonard was a successful western writer before he became a more straightforward crime novelist. While the collected western short stories remains one of my most cherished books, his novels _Escape from Five Shadows_, _Hombre_, and especially _Valdez is Coming_ are total favorites.

If you want something that breaks genre conventions, I would suggest Devil’s Call by J Danielle Dorn. Takes place in 1859, a woman who comes from a long line of witches travels across the country to avenge her husband’s murder.

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. If you want hardcore, violent western cowboys and Indians, go Blood Meridian.

Hey OP, nit what you asked for but I’ll vouch for deWitt’s other work, too. Most especially his newest, *The Librarianist*
