Preferably from the perspective of the child patient.

I’ve read many books about psychiatric hospitals but they are all in adult psychiatric hospitals. Some of the protagonists are teenagers but I want a book I can more heavily relate too. Ages like (5-11) for the protagonist are ideal. Thank you.

    1. These are all pretty old, since children are rarely put into “psychiatric hospitals” anymore.

      * “Lisa & David” and “Jordi” by Theodore Isaac Rubin (Jordi is an outpatient)
      * “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” by Hannah Green
      * “Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen
      * “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini
      * >!”I Am the Cheese” by Robert Cormier!<

You might enjoy books by [Torey L. Hayden](https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2911935.Torey_L_Hayden), who was a selective mutism specialist and wrote about various students in her special education classes (in school, not hospital, settings). The children are the right age, but they’re told from the teacher’s perspective.

It may not be exactly what you are looking for, but The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Bruce D. Perry and Maia Szalovitz is a book about healing trauma in children. Perry is an MD/Ph.D Psychiatrist specializing in childhood trauma. The book follows case studies of several children and many of them are 5-11.

The Institute by Stephen King kind of fits that. It’s not that scary but it is a little twisted.
