I really enjoyed reading “The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi” recently. It’s about a middle-aged female pirate who comes out of retirement for “one last job”. She is funny and ballsy, is fundamentally a good person but doesn’t always make the best choices, and says things like “you look like a f***ing prawn!”, but she also has character depth and is not just a slapstick character.

I would love to read more books with female main characters like this.

Not pirate books, but books with middle-aged female characters who aren’t all whimsical, fashionat or super virtuous taking themselves too seriously, but who are fundamentally good people. I.e. women who swear, who make mistakes, who have dark humour, who have conflicts and adventures, who aren’t perfect at everything and who laugh at their f***ups, but who aren’t a complete nihilistic mess. E.g., women who face challenges with courage but are not the most graceful.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Equal Rites – by Terry Pratchett (witches, very funny)

Wyrd Sisters – by Terry Pratchett

    2. I think you might enjoy *Nettle and Bone* by T. Kingfisher.It features a trio of women of different age and very different character (plus one man, a possessed chicken and an undead dog) on a quest and it is full of snarky but ultimately good-natured banter. (The snarkiest one is an older woman quite a bit above middle-age, but I suppose that’s not a dealbreaker.)

    3. most of Liane Moriarty’s books fall into this category, although they’re more domestic thrillers (but still very funny!) i would check out nine perfect strangers and big little lies
