I’m talking the class of Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s The Shadow of the Wind, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. I’m also a fan of Maggie O’Farrell and Ali Smith.
I’m looking for something that is literary but not *too literary* (not Proust pls) and something that’s a page turner, like a Jack Reacher crime book but not written like it’s a Jack Reacher crime novel, if ya get me.
Ideally not something downright depressing like A Little Life. But a touch of melancholy can be beautiful amidst a heartwarming story like Nicole Krauss’s The History of Love.
I don’t mind any genre as long as it’s beautifully written and I will turn the page.
Yes I am a sucker for classics too like Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Anna Karenina.
Bonus points if it has:
\- a philosophical element
\- badass women who don’t end up brutalised or killed to further the plot
\- something to do with mental health
