This is coming from a very amature reader.
We read A Thousand Splendid Suns my senior year of highschool, and the characters stuck with me ever since. The romance between Laila and Tariq left me on the edge of my seat, the constant suspense had me doubt any good thing that happened, and Mariam’s tragedies and perserverance had me in tears by the end of the book. I’ve always hated reading, only getting through required school reads by relying on audiobooks to keep my attention on the pages, but by the last section of ATSS, I didn’t need my audiobook to stay on task. I was heartbroken when it finished, and wanted to keep reading horribly. Are there any other books with such a good balance of hardships and human connections?
I’m using the flair for romance, but that was only a fraction of what stuck with me about A Thousand Splendid Suns. I adore romance plots, but I can never get into stories where romance is the main deal.
