I am someone with a very good imagination. While reading books, I enjoy picturing people and the events that unfold in my mind. For most people, a face comes to mind, becoming the face of that person throughout the story. This is a skill that often stems from past human experiences; the brain matches a face with similar characteristics. Some have one person’s eyes, another’s nose, and a new person emerges. That’s why I prefer not to watch movies before reading books and limiting myself. However, in Fahrenheit 451, everyone’s faces settled in my mind except for one person: Montag. For instance, the captain seemed somewhat handsome, like a firefighter with a match in his mouth. Normally, these images come to me effortlessly, but Montag just wouldn’t appear in my mind. It’s the first time this has happened. I’ve encountered someone so mysterious and strange that they wouldn’t come to mind no matter what I did or how much I thought. It felt as though I was watching a movie but couldn’t see the main character’s face. While this was an interesting experience, it also frightened me. It left me feeling a void inside. How could something like this happen? It was as if the main character of the movie had a blurry face. This was the strangest thing I found about this book. I’m very curious about what Ray Bradbury was thinking when creating the character of Guy Montag. The rest of the book was not bad, but what impacted me the most were not the events, but Montag’s character development.
