Enter the Aardvark by Jessica Anthony is under 200 pages, easy to read, funny as hell, and is not sci-fi though there is some minor romance but no sex (the romance is between two men if that’s relevant).
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata is the same (short, simple prose, funny, not sci-fi) while containing no romance.

Look up Carl Hiaasen and honestly, jump in anywhere. Some characters are repeating but they’re all stand alone… and so Florida that even Florida is embarrassed by them.

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series by douglas adams is a very funny scifi series, i recommend getting him the ultimate hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy though as it contains all the main books, plus a short story.

Bill Bryson, I’m A Stranger Here Myself. It’s a book of columns he wrote after returning the the United States from England after 20 years. The columns were written for his English followers to explain the US. It’s absolutely hilarious and will make you think of how unusual some of our customs and practices must appear to outsiders. Because you can read most of the columns in a few minutes, it’s an easy book for a new reader to get back to reading.
