I’ve been looking at some my favourite books/movies and have decided on a common, if hard to define, quality many of them share, which is that they contain more or less complex webs of characters connected by familial or otherwise very strong ties. The relationships aren’t necessarily positive, and they can change with time – anyhow, the characters tend to be important people and their relationships and choices often have great impact on the wider scope of the world’s happenings. The characters don’t need to be very realistic psychological portraits – larger than life archetypes are fine.

Examples of media I like I feel this describes: The Silmarillion, the Star Wars franchise.

Please only suggest books without too much sexual content.

    1. – The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey (the first book is [Leviathan Wakes](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8855321-leviathan-wakes?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_15)). My friends describe it as ‘Game of Thrones but in space’ there’s a lot of moving parts, big choices, fantastic characters.

      – Not as big and expansive, but The Devoured World series by Megan E. O’Keefe (first book is [The Blighted Stars](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58340705-the-blighted-stars?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_18)). There’s a lot going on in the series and it focuses a lot on two characters, but the choices they make are crucial and it’s nerve-wracking at points.

      – The Kithamar series by Daniel Abraham. There are two books out and it’s sort of the same story but following different interconnected characters – and each book is very different. I think you can start with any book, [Age of Ash](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58340712-age-of-ash?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=Wz5fIPO5PA&rank=1) is a good intro but I liked [Blade of Dream](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/63076971-blade-of-dream?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_14) better. Big choices and incredible characters.
