Philip Kerr has a terrific spy series set in 1930s Berlin.
does he know Paul Theroux and Jonathan Raban? they’re two of my reliable travel writers. old glory by raban is one of my go to picks for older people. raban commissioned a 16-foot “raft” and tried to retrace Huck Finn’s journey down the Mississippi in it.
David Downing’s Station series might suit him – it starts in the lead up to WW2 and continues through the war, and it’s from the point of view of a British-American journalist who has lived in Berlin for a long time and has a German son and girlfriend. He’s forced into spying for both sides and trying to juggle his different roles, loyalties and responsibilities. It gives a really interesting perspective on what life was like for ordinary Germans at that time.
If he’d like a non-fiction spy: *Ace of Spies: The True Story of Sydney Reilly*
