Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones? I remember it as a bittersweet fantasy involving a dog/human relationship, told through the not-quite-a-dog character’s POV.
Technically a children’s book I believe, but I’ve yet to find a Wynne Jones book that isn’t enjoyable as an adult, same author as howls moving castle.
