I enjoyed “Kingdom of Characters” a book about the language revolution in China. I thought it was fun learning about a different culture with its struggles to unify the language, create their own typewriters, their workarounds for telegraphy, and many different inventors coming up with systems and building on each other’s progress (sometimes from prison). It filled me with inspiration, and I wish to find more books in that vein.
I’ve also enjoyed The Idea Factory. I’ve often seen Skunk Works as a recommendation. But I’m rather interested in non-militaristic advancements, and ideally not about western countries/cultures to gain a different perspective. That’s asking a lot, but maybe I’m lucky.

Love learning about different cultures and their technological advancements! It’s fascinating to see how they navigate challenges and build upon each other’s progress. Non-western non-militaristic advancements definitely offer a unique perspective worth exploring. Would love to discover more books in that vein too!
