    Hello,

I’m pretty new to reading as a pastime
but recently read Gates of fire by Steven Pressfield. I really just loved it the portrayal of the brutality of what life was like back then, I really want to read something els, I’ve tried Pressfeild’s other books but nothings really tickled me.

Any suggestions? As a general rule I love stoic or cheeky characters and anything martial arts/fighting/war related.

Bernard Cornwell can be a good option for you. The Winter King is a retelling of Arthur in the Dark Ages. It’s got lots of fighting and war. You can also try The Saxon Stories by him, I haven’t read it but have heard good things.

Boudica by Manda Scott is another historical fiction with lots of “magic” and fighting.

You can check out books by Giles Kristian.

If you want to try fantasy, try John Gwynne. He has two main series- one is Celtic inspired (The Faithful and the Fallen)and the other is Norse inspired (The Bloodsworn Saga). The Norse one is ongoing and is better imo.

Check out Joe Abercrombie’s First Law. It has a cheeky character and lots of fighting.
