When the main characters are cleaving and slashing their way through hordes and hordes of the main villain’s minions halting thier journey, they proceed on with the belief that they can defeat this unspeakable threat. A threat so ungodly powerful, that they know that they might not have any chances at winning against this villian. And when they get there, they eventually all fall to the villian…
But how?
The unbeatable villian is something I think is not used or seen enough literature these days. Ultimately, leading to the “not every story has a happy ending.” Villians like Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes, Big Brother from George Orwell’s 1984, Azaroth from Lovecraftian Mythos to finally the Dalek Empire from the Doctor Who novels give off this vibe. Especially during the Time War novel with the sickening birth of the Nightmare Child.
But, are unbeatable villian stories/arcs enjoyable or would be too difficult to follow a story where a inevitable outcome is obviously towards the villians side?
Should villians always get defeated or not in Sci Fi/Fantasy novels? If so, why?
Thank you!
