I have been in a reading slump for a long while now. I have picked up books but quickly dnfd them because they were not grabbing my attention much. Recently I started A Haunting in the Arctic by CJ Cooke, it’s good but it’s taking me longer than usual to read.

I want something that will make me want to read the book every moment of free time I get. I want something on the shorter side with easier prose that can be consumed quickly. I just want to finish a book!

My usual genres are fantasy, mystery thriller and horror. I’m not in the mood for Pratchett or Sanderson. Bonus points for KU books. Thanks in advance!

      * Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente, a novella I found through this subreddit. I’m not exactly sure what genre to describe it as, but it has elements of fantasy, mystery, thriller, and horror all in one!

      * We Are Satellites by Sarah Pinsker, a near future sci fi thriller. Not the shortest book, but the author’s writing style is fairly easy in a way in common with many thrillers and books popular among those who read very little or who read very little sci fi.

      * Reamde by Neal Stephenson. A really long book, but a fast paced thriller with some moments of humor.

    2. If you like bookish mysteries, you might enjoy Eight Perfect Murders by Peter Swanson. It was relatively short for a mystery and engaging. I’ve also heard The Kind Worth Killing by him is his great.

Even though I did not love this one, you might enjoy My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. It’s quite readable.

If you like quirky narrators who take it upon themselves to solve a crime/series of crimes, you might enjoy Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson.

      A. R. Torre has a few books on KU. Check them out.

    3. Ilona Andrews Innkeeper Chronicles –A magic Inn, space werewolves and vampires, a lot of really unique aliens, mystery, romance, action, a fun and humorous series

On KU (in my region anyway)

The Mystery of the Canterfell Codicil – PJ Fitzsimmons. I was very surprised I enjoyed this and the other five books in this series as much as I did. Normally I don’t like books written in another person’s style, especially when that style is as distinctive as PG Wodehouse. But these are very well executed. Nice lighthearted style with a very solid puzzle at the centre.

Blood over Bright Haven – ML Kang. I bounced off The Sword of Kaigen but this sucked me right in.
