Books where the protagonist is a horrible person but it’s written in a way that makes you feel bad or sympathize with them in some way without justifying their actions.
Exactly as the title suggest it, it’s a trope that intrigued me when I started reading child of god by cormac McCarthy.( it doesn’t have to be the same type of person Lester is)
Gillian Flynn is very good at writing characters who are morally grey and pretty unlikeable, but somehow compelling because you can see how they got to that state. She’s most famous for Gone Girl, but I think Sharp Objects and Dark Places are better.
Karin Slaughter’s The Good Daughter also has a similar vibe.
