    Hello!

My real life is very complicated and fraught right now…I’m looking for books to help me disconnect at the end of the day and keep me from doom-scrolling, where nothing bad really happens in the book..and honestly there doesn’t need to be a typical story arc. I can’t handle any life-changing, impactful books right now; I can’t do brene brown or self improvement or a MUST-READ ONCE IN YOUR LIFE books.

I’d really love suggestions for engaging books on weird niche topics, like the history of the zip code system, or how ice cream changed the course of the civil war, or why peanuts are so much more allergenic than other legumes… Stuff like that. I think I’ve read all of Mary Roaah’ books; I do like her topics and style.

Thank you in advance for helping me disengage from a dumb period of my life.

    1. I feel this so much. Sometimes reading is just for the escape. How do you feel about graphic literature? There’s tons of cool graphic nonfiction coming out these days about those sort of topics. A couple of my recent faves are “Hidden Systems” by Dan Nott (about how water, electricity, and the internet work) and “Cannabis: The Illegalization of Weed in America” by Box Brown (lighter and more fun than it sounds, promise). Or if you like mysteries at all, you could try Carl Hiaasen….he writes REALLY wild, goofy murder mysteries that are all set in Florida and the point is to make fun of all the crazy Florida-ness. Super light and funny and the totally unsympathetic bad guys ALWAYS get what they deserve. (ETA: Unless your current life problems are due to you being a shady developer on the run from both your mob contacts and crooked environmental lawyers. Then Hiaasen might hit a sore spot lol.)
