Most of the time the character development in books is positive. For example, the protagonist is selfish and uncaring, but during the course of the book or series learns to care about others.
I’m looking for the reverse process. For example, the mc sees the world through rose-colored glasses, very optimistic and kind. But he keeps getting betrayed and used. So slowly he stops being so good and learns to only care about himself and not help others because they don’t deserve it.
All genres except romance is fine. But fantasy would be the best.

Somewhat along the lines of what you’re talking about is the main character in Crime and Punishment. He doesn’t exactly begin seeing the world with rosy glasses though.
