NaNoWriMo is around the corner and I plan to participate this year. I’ve been preparing and outlining a novel and want to do some reading research this month. My goal is to sharpen my prose and descriptive style, and my vision for this story is to write through an almost poetical lens.
Any suggestions for novels that are written like vignettes or with lyrical prose? I am thinking prose akin to Cormac McCarthy or in the style of Virginia Woolf’s *The Waves.* Preferably horror, gothic horror, weird or eldritch fiction since that is the genre I will be writing, but really any genre will do.
Thank you so much in advance! The suggestions you all gave in my previous ask were wonderful.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke! It’s a wonderful, quick read. The prose is very ethereal and the genre is fantasy but… surreal and mysterious. Hard to describe! One of my favorites 🙂 I think this is exactly the kind of book you’re looking for!
Kitchens of the Great Midwest
A Visit From the Goon Squad (and it’s sequel Candy House)
A Council of Dolls
Check out THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY by Thornton Wilder.
It won the Pulitzer Prize, it’s beautifully poetic, and its subject matter tiptoes right to the edge of Weird (I’d say they’re cousins).
