My son will be 9 in 3 weeks and it’s been hard to keep him interested in books lately. He used to love reading. We read through the Harry Potter books together, which he loved, but it was mostly me reading to him for the last few books since they get more difficult compared to the earlier books.

We just finished reading Holes and was so excited to read it. He was all smiles, bouncing up and down, happily kicking his legs. I think what really helped is the reading level was perfect for him. He has asked for more books that are similar, but I grew up reading very different books as a kid (Anne of Green Gables, American Girls, Babysitters Club).

I’m thinking maybe The Giver, Charlotte’s Web, or The Hobbit. He really likes the Lord of the Rings films, which makes me incredibly excited since I used to read the books over and over in high school. He also has been enjoying the Wings of Fire graphic novels.

    1. Charlotte’s Web is good. Black Beauty? Other Side of the Mountain? The Hobbit should be ok for that age too. How about Jonathan Livingston Seagull?

    2. Vamperstein-Bex on

There’s a sequel to Holes called Small Steps

A Series of Unfortunate Events By Lemony Snicket

Maybe some of the Roald Dahl books

    3. ThoroughlyGray on

The Alex Rider series (teenage boy spy working for the M16) or Artemis Fowl (boy genius develops technology to discover a magical world of faeries for his own personal gain, but then has to team up with them and begrudgingly befriends them)

    4. The Mysterious Benedict Society, the Narnia series, Diana Wynne Jones’ Chrestomanci series
