Would love to get in to fiction / historical fiction but i’ve only really been able to focus on simple autobiography type books. I want to start imagining again and really fall into a book like i do with a movie.

Last year i picked up David Grann’s ‘Lost city of Z’ by suggestion at a book store. While it started off pretty cool I honestly put it down around page 100 and just didn’t have the energy/interest to keep going. I hope to finish it though one day.

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

    1. This will sound strange since it’s an 1,110+ page book, but I’d recommend [The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12468.The_Executioner_s_Song?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=g0avrWUiDf&rank=3). It sits firmly in my top-5 books of all times and it’s an amazing read. You might want to consider an ebook if that’s an option because the physical book is damn big. But one reason I jumped on it for you is that it is basically written in very small tidbits. You can tear through as much as you want at any time, but if you lose energy and stop after a couple pages, it’s super easy to just pick it right back up. And just read a few pages again if that’s what works.

    2. Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is the one book I always recommend to people as it is the most unique and fun book I have ever read. I am over 70 years old and have been reading vociferously practically since my eyes opened. I have adhd and some autistic traits and my real world was hell growing up, so I learned to regulate my emotions through reading. I have read literally thousands of books. My favorite authors: Vonnegut, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain, Ken Follett, Tolkien, Stephen King, and many others.

You can do what you like, but I recommend not reading any reviews of Ishmael as they will inevitably give away at least one surprise. Just order the book, receive it, and start reading.

I can tell you these things

      1. It is an easy and fun read. This is not James Joyce or the Bible. There is nothing to ‘grapple’ with and the ideas are easy to understand, even though you are likely not to have been exposed to some of them before.
      2. It will possibly ‘profoundly’ open your mind to ways of looking at humanity that you may not have employed before. This is not a ‘heavy’ book, and it’s actually fun to read.

This will probably hold your interest enough, even with your adhd brain striving to distract your mind, it’s simply too compelling to pull away!

Good luck! I hope you actually read this! Let me know if you do.

Also, anyone else who has read this and will kindly confirm what I am saying will help the OP pick this one.

Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

      The Passengers by John Marrs

      Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones (Both of her series are excellent, but this one maybe easier to start with)

Alice by Christina Henry (I love all her books, and this is an excellent book to start with)

The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker

The Man Who Loved Dogs is great historical fiction – about the murder of Trotsky and the emotional vagaries of growing up in the international communist movement. I don’t have a great attention span and I couldn’t put it down.

    5. William F Drannan – Thirty One years on the Plains and in the Mountain (Auto-biography, but I think you would like it.)
Another from the Old West – Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey (Fiction)
The author Louis L’amour, does really great cliff hangers which would keep the plot moving forward.
