Not sure which tag to add as I’m looking for any genre…
I’m a 35F and have been through more than most in my years. I can no longer work and no one else in my life has dealt with the same darkness and hopelessness that I have so they aren’t easy to talk to.
Between my severe disabling illnesses and late AuDHD diagnosis, I have found myself a misunderstood, lonely, nihilistic atheist who is struggling to find reasons to carry on and find a purpose in my suffering.
I’m looking for a *non-religious* book to help me through this crisis. Also, darker books are fine – sometimes the darkness makes me feel more understood.
Thank you!

I know you said non-religious, but maybe Til We Have Faces by CS Lewis? It’s CS Lewis, so there’s no escaping some of the Christian themes, but unlike in Narnia they’re really quiet. It’s a retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth from the perspective of one of Psyche’s sisters and it’s the story of a lonely misunderstood woman who suffers all her life and yet persists. If you’ll forgive my spoiling a tiny bit, our darling narrator does find a purpose in her suffering, and not a religiously motivated one, in my opinion.
Whalefall – Daniel Kraus
Shark Heart – Emily Habeck
Monstrilio – Gerardo Sámano Córdova
