I absolutely love Bill Bryson’s travelogues. I also enjoy Maarten Troost and Paul Theroux.

Recommend your favorite travelogues that provide a strong sense of place, good descriptions, delve into the history of the location, and include fun facts about it.

Bonus points if the setting is a tropical island or some coastal region, but any suggestion is welcome except for Antarctica and expeditions on Mount Everest.

Kitchen confidential isn’t reaaaaally about travel, but if you like tony, you’ll like it, and the parts where he’s in Tokyo are definitely travel. You can 100% see how he’s in his element when he starts writing about Japan and how he transformed into the travel icon he became. Also wanna follow this thread since I love bill Bryson too.

    2. Colin McPhee, *A House in Bali*. He spent ten years there in the 1930s doing ethnomusicological fieldwork, and there is a fair bit about Balinese musical thinking, but you don’t need to know music theory to follow it. His descriptions of the culture are sharp and his food writing is droolworthy.
