I’m afraid this book is not so well-known as it should be. The theme and plot in this children’s book is well executed and intricate, the dialogue and character’s behaviour and psychology being realistic. Also, it really brings me kind of nostalgic feeling of running and play in the English orchard. Nice plot twists, too!

Read this book as a child and absolutely loved it. I think I fell in love with Hatty. It was also my first exposure to magical clocks and time travel which led me down this pathway in subsequent books.
But it is the ending that had such a profound effect on me. I still get a reaction when I think of it now. I dont want to spoil it for anyone else but I was in tears and I still dont know whether it was through happiness or sadness. Suddenly coming to terms with the whole time, generations, age thing really moved me. I never saw my Grandma the same after that.
