    Hello, everyone!

My mother’s birthday is coming soon. She’s a huge bookworm and loves to read, and thought that it would be lovely to surprise her.

Do you have any recs for adult fantasy that are mythology retellings? She loves books that are big on complex family relationships. Could also have romance, but not that important.

She’s also fine with contemporary fiction and if it has any historical events take a place.

Thank you so much and have a lovely day.

    1. Stephen Fry’s *Mythos* series of retellings of Greek myths have nonsensically elaborate family relationships, as per the originals. Not sure if myth counts as fantasy, but there are definitely fantastical things happening.

    2. Rankinitiative on

Circe by Madeline Miller? This genre is huge at the moment, if you search mythology retellings in the search at the top of this community you’ll probably find some fairly comprehensive posts from the last few weeks.

    3. Yes, so this is my autistic special interest.

Jennifer Saint had complex family relationships in “Elektra”, which focuses on a mother’s relationship with her abrasive daughter. “Ariadne” also had some messy sibling relationships. Madeline Miller’s “Circe” is about a nymph who’s rejected by her family, but drags on a bit in the middle. “Till We Have Faces” by CS Lewis is a Christian-inspired spin on The Golden Ass and the Eros and Psyche story in it, and depicts a possessive love between sisters.
