First, “Alexander the Great” by Philip Freeman. He was the yard stick these kind of people in the west measured themselves against for thousands of years.

“The Fall of Carthage” by Adrian Goldsworthy. This isn’t the story of one man, but of empires and so many of the kind of people you’re interested in show up. “Carthago delenda est.”

“The Borgias: The Hidden History” by G.J. Meyer. The most infamous family of the Italian Renaissance and their take over of the Catholic Church, and so exerted dominion over the King and Queens of Europe.

“Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life” by Jon Lee Anderson. A man who traveled the world to engage in Revolution where ever he could. A rebel always looking for a cause.

“The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple” by Jeff Guinn. A bit different from the previous suggestions, Jones was no less interested in power and control and “winning.”
