Thank everyone in advance! I am on my 24th audiobook since giving birth to my son who demands contact naps. I listened to my favorite book of all time A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and it got me on a kick of books like it. Although the two mentioned above are memoirs and not fiction I would be interested in either. What I’m looking for is that female protagonist in a lower class family with mental health or addiction issues and their coming of age story. Make protagonist is also something I’d consider as well.

Three Little Words by Ashley Rhodes-Courter is gut wrenching.
You might also like Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt
{{I Know Why Cages Birds Fly by Maya Angelou}}
{{I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy}}
First, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is also my favorite. Betty Smith wrote 3 other books that are similar. Joy in the Morning (least fave but still good), Tomorrow will be Better, and Maggie Now.
I’d also recommend Bastard out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare, and The Heart is a lonely hunter by Carson McCullers.
Male protagonist growing up in foster case and dealing with addiction, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
Male memoir growing up poor with alcoholic father; Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt.
Never Simple by Liz Scheier
You might enjoy *The Sound of Gravel* by Ruth Wariner. It’s a memoir, so nonfiction, but it’s about her childhood growing up in a polygamist doomsday cult in Mexico and eventually escaping it to live her own life.
