So… I don’t want event spoilers, but does the protagonist ever stop being a cowardly moron whose journey I can get behind? Because right now I just feel annoyed with him.

I figure he’s in a parallel universe, though I’m not sure why, as a quantum mechanics genius, he hasn’t figured that out yet, but he is now on his second escape from the well meaning people (yes, I know he had a traumatic abduction, during which I felt more disgusted and annoyed by his cringing than anything) without trying to glean any information from them, and I’m frustrated.

I’m easy. I LOVED Project Hail Mary (so I’m not against nerdy fiction starring someone with a lack of a certain degree of intestinal fortitude), but everyone has been talking up this book. If this gets into something other than a cat and mouse chase to avoid the protagonist and therefore the audience being informed, I’m down, but if he stays like this, I’m out.

    Thoughts?

    1. It’s been a while since I’ve actually read the book, but I remember not liking the protagonist for a good chunk of the book but he becomes a lot better by the ending imo

    2. So, you’re saying if you were abducted at gun point, drugged, and woke up in a strange lab full of people who want information from you then you would quickly realize you were in a parallel universe?

I find that incredibly difficult to believe.

I never found him to be cowardly or a moron, so maybe he won’t in your perspective.

    3. The short answer is no.

Dark Matter is just a darker version of The Midnight Library so do with that as you will.

Book gets better! Just suspend your belief a bit. Are you reading it or listening to audiobook? I listened it and it was a good listen, gave me less time to think about all the details and had me more immersed in the story. I read/listened to some of his other works and all got better in the second half, as the world is built.
