I almost exclusively read non-fiction and get most of my fixtion from tv/films. Especially recently I’ve almost exclusively been reading non-fiction (mostly books on war, biology or zoology).
Some of the fiction I have read and enjoyed are LOTR, ASOIAF, some Lovecraft, The Snowman (by Jo Nesbø), The Invisible Man, The Road, 1984 and Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy.
So I was hoping for some recommendations for fiction books.
If it would help give a better understanding of my tastes I’ll also give my favourite fiction TV and films here:
The Wire, OG Star Trek, Frasier, Twilight Zone, True Detective, 2001: A Space Odyssey, There Will Be Blood, The Big Lebowski, SE7EN, Godfather 1 & 2.
Hope that helps. Thanks in advance.

I recently read a book called Salvaged by Madeleine Roux you might like. It felt like a cross between Alien and the Thing.
Yahtzee Croshaw is a funny author with great characters. Narrates his own audiobooks.
Differently Morphus and Existentially Challenged- Governmental agency involved in the regulation of magic and extra dimensional beings.
Mogworld – Main character is undead. Hijinks insue.
Will save the galaxy for food and Will destroy the galaxy for cash – An unemployed star pilot tries to get by in a universe where transporters are a thing.
How do you feel about insanely well-researched alternate history? The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal is about an asteroid hitting earth and causing devastation that leads 1950’s space agencies to kick the space race into high gear years before it did, and also forces them to accept women astronauts. It’s an extraordinary book with extremely detailed research. There’s a 2nd and 3rd book but they’re all solo stories that end so you don’t have to read the next if you don’t want.
Caves Of Steel by Isaac Asimov.
If you’ve never read or seen Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, you could start there.
– Redshirts by John Scalzi has Star Trek references
– Rod Serling novelized 19 of his Twilight Zone scripts in three books (Stories from the Twilight Zone, More Stories from the Twilight Zone, New Stories from the Twilight Zone)
Brave New World by Huxley
* Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind (Fiction/Fantasy)
* Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr (Historic-Fiction/Sci-Fi)
* All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (Historic-Fiction)
* No Country for Old Men (Western/Fiction)
* The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (Sci-Fi)
* Kindred by Octavia E. Butler (Sci-Fi)
* Annihilation by Jeff VanderMerr (Sci-Fi)
So what are your favorite books on War & Biology?
Catch- 22 by Heller Joseph
The Catcher in The Rye by Salinger J.D.
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Márquez Gabriel García
To Kill a Mockingbird by Lee Harper
Dune by Herbert Frank
Northern Lights by Pullman Philip
We seem to have similar tastes, at least in movies/tv.
The creator of True Detective, Nic Pizzolatto, wrote an excellent gritty crime novel, Galveston. If you you like that, you should also check out Charlie Huston (equally gritty, but more sarcastic humor. And Charlie Huston is my favorite author, so If you only read one book ever, I’d recommend either Already Dead, or Caught Stealing if you think a vampire book would turn you off–it won’t.)
Daniel Woodrell is another author to check out. Wrote Winter’s Bone. Dark southern crime fiction.
To tie in some more humorous novels, check out Christopher Moore. I would start with Bloodsucking Fiends or Fluke. And Carl Hiaasen writes incredibly funny florida crime novels.
All Quiet On the Western Front is probably one of my favourite books ever.
Old Man’s War – John Scalzi
