    Hi all,

Inspired by someone else’s post on here about being the one in their family to gift books. I suspect that’s many of us in here, and I’d love to hear what you all are gifting this year, or favorite gifts from past years (given or received!).

We only do individual gifts for the kiddos in our family because there’s a lot of us lol, and I’ve given them all books for the last 17 years. At around age 10ish, every kid always gets a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth.

Here’s what everyone is getting this year:

Niece, 22 yo: We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han

Nephew, 23: Kayfabe: Stories You’re Not Supposed to Hear from a Pro Wrestling Production Company Owner by Sean Oliver

Nephew, 17: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer (total shot in the dark, he is not a big reader. One day I’ll find THE book though. In the meantime it’s sort of a running joke rn 😂)

Niece, 15: Cinderella, as illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia (she’s super into art)

Niece, 16: Big Fish by Daniel Wallace, and The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt (I owe her for her bday too lol)

Nephew, 13: Aircraft, the Definitive Visual History from the Smithsonian

Niece, 10: The Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett

Great nephew, 1 (🥹): Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer, and Jamberry by Bruce Degan (I am controlling myself for Christmas but WILL go overboard for his birthday in January 😂)

    Can’t wait to see yours!!

I’m always a little nervous about giving books to others… I think I’m afraid they won’t like my choices, so I generally prefer to recommend books and let people do their own research on said books. (This is a weird mental block, and I need to get over it.)

That said, I gave books away for Mother’s Day this year:

      – For my mom: Where the Crawdads Sing (Delia Owens). I saw the movie in theaters with her and my partner, and she loved it, so it felt like a good choice.

      – For my MIL: Four Seasons in Rome (Anthony Doerr). This is my all-time favorite memoir, and it touches on topics my MIL loves, like art and architecture and travel; it also talks quite a bit about parenting, so that felt appropriate for the holiday. As a final bonus, my MIL had already read one of Doerr’s novels, and I knew she liked his writing style.

    2. I purchased the entirety of the Poldark series for my mother last Christmas and she just about cried! She’s a huge Outlander fan and had watched the show based on the Poldark novels so I knew it would be well-received.

My sister is more difficult to shop for as she’s an avid reader and has well over 200 or 300+ books on her shelves. She only really seems to enjoy YA and Adult Fantasy but I’ve started gifting her those really beautiful collectible editions of the classics from Barnes and Noble and she loves them.
