I don’t know if we have an official answers for this. What is the reasoning for you?
To me it’s about the fact that the protagonists of the story come from different social classes (“pillars”) that sustain the society of the medieval European world. Clergy (Prior Phillip), Nobility (William Hamleigh), Peasantry (Tom and Jack), and Bourgeoisie (Aliena). Just as pillars are also what support a cathedral, which is the central theme of the story.

Samuel 2:8
”He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and he hath set the world upon them”
The rise of unlikely leaders, and their attempts to navigate their new role without losing what makes them **them**, is central to the book. Philip. Jack, to a lesser extent.
