I recently finished up A Cook’s Tour (the book), and I was enthralled by it in a way I’ve never been by travel writing before. What made it so special for me were some of Tony’s inherent qualities that really shone through in his writing: His willingness to speak his mind, his irreverent informality, his humour, his curiosity and open-mindedness, his vigilant self-criticism, and his ability to cut through his own bullshit and do some real soul searching. I found beauty in the combination of crass, deadpan humour and really genuine introspection, in the way that his devil-may-care attitude would drop to reveal his incredible insight and ability to find meaning. The self-aware snark accompanying and ultimately giving way to waxing poetic revealed greater truth to me than any of the more formal or self-serious travel writing I’ve read.
I assume there are other travel writers with a similar style to Tony’s. Does anybody know of any?
