Just bought the book, watched a single short recommendation video and was hooked. Curios what reddit thinks of it. I enjoy sad books a lot, but this one I heard is especially traumatising. NO SPOILERS PLEASE‼️
I’ve heard a lot of differing reviews, though mostly positive. For me, the writing was beautiful, but after the hundredth traumatic experience, it started reading more like trauma porn. It was like the author was trying to make it as impactful as ever but forgot to incorporate a proper story behind it. Unfortunately, so many sad things happened at once to the point I was numb by the ending. Don’t let this put you off though! Loads of people went through a rollercoaster while reading.

I didn’t like it. Too many unbelievable things happen to one main character, to the point where it just felt ridiculous.

The writing really draws you in and makes you feel like you know the main character so well (he finds it difficult to open up to those around him so the reader knows him better than anyone else). You will feel devastated about what he is going through. This book will stay with me for life. Also, I mainly disagree about it being unrealistic. People who are abused are more likely to be abused in the future, so I think to say that it is unrealistic is a little naive.
Although I loved how invested I got into the book and how I got to know and love/hate the characters , I am still torn up about how I found the book overall. I am not sure what the overall message is meant to be, and I am uncomfortable with some of the options for what it could be.
Overall though, definitely in my top 3 most engrossing reads this year.

The audio book it’s totally worth it! If that’s something you personally enjoy, I super recommend it. It gives you the opportunity to appreciate the writing and also get more involved with the characters and the storytelling. I cried a lot listening to the audio book, and it changed my views on depression and self harm a little bit…
