Any book recommendations that are are very gay, high to medium fantasy / medium to high magic system. Has new adult/young adult vibes like I am number four, warrior heir, red queen, and shadow and bone.

I would also like that it is for adults in the way that it has spice. But also has the fun of young adult books where the author isn’t pretentious.

When I mean gay I mean I would like the main character to be gay. Also any additional queer representation is a plus.

Lastly i would greatly prefer written by a gay man if possible also. Also isn’t coming of age type book, being gay is matter of fact, and isn’t dealing with homophobia issues like in current events.

    1. The City We Became by NK Jemison doesn’t really have a single main character, but of the six or so that are three or four are gay (depending on what you qualify as a main character). The magic part of it I found to be very different and refreshing and the characters’ voices are strong and independent from one another. NK Jemison is not a gay man, but she has a created a very strong story that involves gay people as central to the thesis of the story without it being a coming of age or fight against homophobia. It skews a little older than young adult though.

One that is by a trans person (they/them) is Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. It centers around a trans teen who seeks to find acceptance in his tradition family, whose purpose is to help souls depart from the land of the living when they are ready and to heal people who are living. It is more coming of age and does deal with issues of transphobia, deadnaming, and the like. So that part may not be what you are looking for.

One final recommendation, also not by a gay man, but that is centered around gay characters and high in magic is the Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell, starting with Carry On. It’s a chosen one story that is a little bit coming of age, but mostly only because of the age of the characters. I would best describe it as Harry Potter if he got with Draco instead.
