I’m a HUGE fan of fantasy books lately (specifically books I can find on audible, as it’s hard for me to sit and spend a few hours reading, so audible is what I use 99.9% of the time. However if the book is good enough, I’m not opposed to picking up a hardback!). All my recommendations have been from my bf and our friends who all enjoy the same genre/same vein of books, such as the First Law, Mistborn, Lightbringer, Shadow of the Conqueror, etc. And I’ve LOOOVED these books!! But I want to branch out side of the obvious recommendations my friends give me, I want to find some good reads that I could enjoy as much as these series’^^^ sooo onto reddit I’ve come to search! Lol
-I’m looking for fantasy, I love magic systems (or unique world-systems like Shadow of the Conqueror does beatifully), but also definitely rooted in reality or even just relatable struggles & tribulation.
– I love some good violence, gore, raw topics. I’m not one to shy away from stories wrought with terror and fear, villans and situations that are truly harrowing. In fact the darker and more raw, the better!!
– I really enjoyed the First Law’s ability to portray political/ societal unrest, kinda about the people “rising up” against a leadership or against a world that feels doomed.
– an absolute MUST is characters that are dual tonned, deep and actually complicated as people actually are- characters that aren’t always ALL good or ALL bad. Basically I want to really believe the characters and their journey, and hopefully relate to their struggle/ journey.
– I LOVE a strong, badass female character. I want to follow a woman’s journey and NOT have her be a damsel in distress, but rather a strong fighter, defeating the odds. Reference: the way the Cosmere Universe portrays strong women.
– I love a trilogy/ series, but I have a few long series’ I’m working on so if u could recommend a series that has a somewhat limited series, like less than 10/12 books. I mean if it’s WORTH the time and if others can back that up, I’ll definitely give it a shot. But I don’t want to even start a series that long if it’s not going to hold up to some other great series, cuz I’m definitely trying to read as many books as I can this year 🙂
– another MUST (or just REALLY really prefer) is books that will Make me FEEL shit, lol. Make me cry, make me fall in love with a character just to see them fall to their weaknesses or foes, make me laugh and feel like I’m getting to know REAL people.
**TLDR: looking for GOOD book recommendations (12 book series or less) that fall in line with writings such as Lightbringer, First Law, Mistborn, Red Rising- & authors like Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Brent Weeks, etc.
