For my English lit coursework, I have to choose two novels with similar themes which I must then write a literary critique and comparison on. I really want to do trainspotting by Irvine Welsh but I can’t think of a second novel. I was thinking either the theme of addiction which of course would be the obvious choice, but I’m also considering the theme of loyalty (the tests of loyalty, to which extent it is applicable, the effects of external factors etc etc). One of the novels has to be post 2000 (which trainspotting is not) has anyone got any ideas?

How about The Girls from Corona Del Mar by Rufi Thorpe? It came out in 2014. There are themes of loyalty and addiction in this book. It also has a female perspective, in contrast to Trainspotting.
You could stay in Scotland and go with *Shuggie Bain* by Douglas Stuart. It’s about loving someone with and addiction and also has themes of family loyalty. On the other hand, it’s so heartbreakingly beautiful your arms will fall off and you’ll have to type the essay with your nose.
Something a bit lighter might be Augusten Burroughs *Dry*. It is not as literary, but is about recovery from addiction.
