I am on the left side of the political spectrum. I’m looking for a book that will challenge my thought process. I would love it if it were very well researched and well thought out arguments (aka no Ben shaperio, Jordan peterson, etc). Thank you!

A book that changed some of how I think about the world was Christopher Lasch’s [The True And Only Heaven: Progress And Its Critics](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/386885) (1991). Lasch would have no patience for modern conservative talking heads. The books only real shortcoming is he doesn’t really tackle how to combat conservative ideas sliding into racism and xenophobia (while condemning both in multiple passages).
You might want to take a look at Allan Bloom’s [The Closing of the American Mind.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Closing_of_the_American_Mind) While reviews were mixed, it was influential and became a surprise best seller.
