The only examples I know are the White Wakers from ASOIAF, Necrons from 40k, and the Flood from Halo. The setting doesn’t matter as long as there is some sort of ancient, dormant species that will supposedly bring doom to the world/universe/galaxy/whatever.

Also, if the atmosphere would be bleak, that’d be nice. I doubt many (if any) books fitting this description would be unicorns and rainbows, but I thought it’d be important to say.

    1. Out of the Earth series by Jake Bible. 4 books: Out of the Earth, Out of the Sky, Out of the Fire, & Out of the Stars

Giant monsters emerge from the earth and start the end of the world as we know it. A higher intelligence has other plans though and humanity is forced to make dire choices in order to survive, if that’s even possible?!

This series follows a variety of people, in different locations and positions of power across the country, as they all struggle through the chaos and destruction in a desperate attempt at survival. Lots of cussing throughout the books… but given the circumstances the characters are in, I’d cuss a lot too🤷‍♂️

Also, Rawr by Eddie Generous is a pretty good short novel.

An ancient beast emerges from its cave and begins a savage rampage across the land. Hunters try to stop the prehistoric killer, but this monster is the new apex and it plans on ending everything unlucky enough to cross its path.
