after years of not reading, i binge read “the ballad of songbirds and snakes” before i went to see the movie, and it reminded me how much i LOVE reading. i’m looking for books with similar dark themes, books that you just can’t put down. a few things i enjoyed were that the main character was the villain, there was romance, but it wasn’t overwhelming, and there were so many twists and dark moments that just kept me hooked! any recommendations are welcome!

I recommend looking into the dark fantasy and grimdark fantasy genre as a whole! As someone who also loved YA dystopian, I’ve found my tastes for the darker side of fiction that is rooted in emotional writing to translate well to grimdark romantic fantasy books like For Mist and Tar; Mistborn; Daughter of No Worlds. These books, too, all have themes of rising up against oppressive governments, and many of the characters you could consider “morally grey”. Hope that helps!
