I absolutely love Stephen Blackmoore’s Eric Carter novels. They’re so inventive and frequently funny, and his use of Aztec myth in the first few books was so fresh for me.
Eric is a necromancer who returns to LA to solve his sister’s murder and ends up caught up in the machinations of gods and his own past in the first book, and the series actually only gets better as it goes along. Not a ton of romance admittedly but very enjoyable.
Edit: For romance, you might actually try Crescent City – it’s set in another world but a world that feels modern/urban. And the third book is out in January.
