It is no secret that Jim Morrison of The Doors was an avid reader. He surrounded himself in books for years. Crime and Punishment is one of my favorite books. I noticed that Jim seems to reference the book in the song The Soft Parade. During the outro of the song, he says
When all else fails
We can whip the horse’s eyes
And make them sleep and cry
I feel this is in reference to Raskolnikov’s dream while he was more or less in a coma and dreaming of a horse getting its eyes whipped. The whole temperament of the song coincides with the same feeling of the book. I really feel this was the inspiration for the song.
