Hi there! I’m hoping to surprise my girlfriend with a book (or two) this Christmas, but I’m having a hard time deciding on what to get her. I don’t read in English very often, so I’m not familiar with a lot of popular titles. She really enjoyed reading “The Bell Jar,” “1984,” “Interpreter of Maladies,” “Little Women,” and “Macbeth.” Do you have any suggestions for books she might like? Thanks so much for your help!

She seems to enjoy classics, so: Of Mice and Men, Wide Sargasso Sea, and The Bluest Eye
Good luck!!
You might try *Mrs. Dalloway* by Virginia Woolf, or *The Yellow Wallpaper* by Charlotte Perkins Gilman as they’re both classics with female authors and similarities to *The Bell Jar*.
You could do additional books by the authors you listed, like *The Namesake* by Jhumpa Lahiri or *Animal Farm* by George Orwell.
You could go with classic literature by female authors, since the titles you listed include this overlap. These could include *Pride and Prejudice* by Jane Austen, *Jayne Eyre* by Charlotte Bronte, or *The Age of Innocence* by Edith Wharton.
*The Lottery* by Shirley Jackson might be a really fun fit, especially if she’s unfamiliar with the plot. Female author, arguably a “classic” by now, and thematically fits with some of her other reads in its skeptical/horrified view of society.
Best of luck to you 🙂
