I prefer fantasy or historical fiction. Not something contemporary. This is not necessary but she gets evil as the book continues. I would like there to be some romance as well.
The plot should be complex, if there is scheming and plotting that’s a bonus. Something not so young adult. More new adult or mature. Thank you

    1. Well, she’s more than morally grey, but “In the Garden of Spite” by Camilla Bruce is about Belle Gunness, a 19th century serial killer. Bruce imagines her as a poor woman who’ll stop at nothing to achieve her dreams of stability and respectability.

I’m thinking Thomas Hardy (Tess of the d’Ubervilles), Edith Wharton, or William Thackeray (Vanity Fair). Historical fiction with female characters.

The Poppy War trilogy by R.F. Kuang. It’s fantasy, but heavily inspired by Chinese history. The main character is very driven and morally gray, and she gets increasingly worse as the story progresses. It’s been years since I read it, so I don’t remember very well, but if I remember correctly there isn’t much romance happening in the books. There’s some potentially romantic tensions, but no romantic subplot.
