It’s a group of about 20 of my friends, all educated, professional women. The last three books I chose, Lessons in Chemistry, Neverwhere, and Remarkably Bright Creatures, were big hits.

We aren’t really a beach read crowd but tend to prefer somewhat quirky, lighter fare like the above books. I love Weird Lit but I don’t think they’re all quite ready for, say, The Library at Mount Char or Tender Is The Flesh.

I’d prefer something new-ish and maybe a little offbeat.

    Thank you!

I loved When Women Were Dragons, definitely quirky and offbeat, with great potential for discussion.

Devolution by Max Brooks. It’s one of my favorites, and I think it would be a good book club choice because of the way the MC develops as she gains life experience. It’s told via diary entries from Katie, a young woman struggling with marital roles and self confidence who goes on what is supposed to be a relaxing house sitting in a technologically advanced remote community run by wellness specialists and ends up in the midst of a natural disaster. Then Bigfoot comes. The way Katie processes her experiences and her personal development really make the story. It’s gripping, but also hilarious and unexpectedly sweet at times.

Also, it’s out in paperback now, so it’s affordable, and the chapters are all about the same length.

    5. The Ghosts of Thorwald Place by Helen Power

It’s a murder mystery from the victim’s point of view. It was the author’s debut novel last year.
