TLDR: I’m sad I haven’t read more mermaid stories. Give me mermaid stories.
So like years ago on Quotev (if anyone here even knows what that is) someone was writing a book about mermaids. Unfortunately, a lot of people were trying to steal credit for it and repost it as chapters came out (even copying the “plz stop stealing” author’s notes) so the author went to Patreon so people would stop stealing the book. Anyway, I wasn’t able to read the book after that because I was a child with no money and I’ve been thinking about it recently and how I never read any other mermaid books.
That book’s story was about a girl who got kidnapped and turned into a mermaid by some bad guys so that the mermaid they already captured wouldn’t get lonely and die like fish do. The girl knows sign language and teaches the mermaid sign language so that they can communicate and the mermaid teaches the girl how to do mermaid stuff like have a tail and not drown underwater. Also, they became friends I think and that’s it cuz I never finished it.
Anyhoo, if you happen to know exactly what book I’m talking about you get my eternal gratitude and an invisible cookie. All other recs get a thumbs-up cuz mermaids are cool.

***The Mermaid’s Sister***
by Carrie Anne Noble
Damnit… now I wanna read that book it sounds good. If anyone knows reply to me too
Mira Grant has two mermaid novels. They’re a more realistic and scary take on what real life mermaids would be like.
Mermaid melody. It’s about a mermaid princess that has to save the seas with the other six mermaid princesses from an evil but sexy bastard and his weird harem of fish turned into sexy ladies.
Their power is to sing and it does damage to enemies, they can take human form but turn back when wet and they get drunk if they drink pop because bubbles I guess.XD
It also has an anime adaptation with actual music and its awesome.
I can’t help with the book you searching for, but my other recommendations would be:
The Deep by Rivers Salomon
Speak the Ocean by Rebecca Enzor
A while ago on whatsthatbook someone asked about a book with a similar premise? It doesn’t quite match, but I’ll toss the book they were looking here regardless: “Cry of the Mer” by FantasyOcean
The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey
