I am in a huge mood to discuss Peter Pan with people right now. Concerning the original story, it’s potential, and all of it’s various adaptations.
What is your favorite adaptation of the original story? And do you feel like that one did the original story justice? Or do you still think that we have yet to see a version do that?
Additional question: Who is your favorite Captain Hook?

Peter Pan is the angel of death, a monarch to the kingdom of the dead.
He’s a mythological figure essentially
I guess Captain Hook was cooler than Peter Pan. Ok, the kid had pointy ears and could fly, but captain Hook was …cool
I’m not a fan of Peter Pan personally
Peter Pan stories are one of my special interests since I was a very little kid. There is something morbid and haunting about a boy who never grows up even as the people he loves (if he can even love) die of old age.
Also, Jeremy Sumpter as Peter in the 2003 movie was my first crush 😅 That’s my favorite adaptation, by the way. It also has my favorite Captain Hook — Jason Isaacs! The movie is a pretty faithful adaptation, and no straight movie adaptation of the original story has topped it for entertainment value, in my opinion. Some people like *Hook* better, but I don’t count it in the same category.
One of my favorite aspects of the story as I get older, however, is Wendy. Isn’t it interesting that the boys get to be boys in Neverland, but Wendy still has to assume the decidedly grown up role of “mother”? Isn’t it fascinating how Peter’s dearest wish (to not grow up) is always being granted, but when Wendy dares to want something outside of Peter’s little world (to have a real family and real love) she runs afoul of Peter? When I was a small child I thought being taken away to Neverland would be the best thing that could ever happen to me, but now as an adult I see that Peter Pan is a misogynist, Wendy deserves better, and growing up is fucking awesome.
If you’re interested in a fresh, Wendy-centric take on the story, I recommend the poetry collection *Not Merely Because of the Unknown That Was Stalking Toward Them*, by Jenny Boully. It’s a bunch of prose poems.
